It’s not news that most Flea-Control Products Are Dangerous! Whether your flea control preference is the collar, spray, topical solutions, or the most popular on the market – “spot-on” – you are unwittingly exposing your pet, your family, and the environment to some pretty nasty poisons!
The active ingredients in these solutions include chemicals such as imidacloprid, fipronil, permethrin, Methoprene, and pyriproxyfen, all of which cause serious health problems in animals including humans.
Other forms of flea control – powders and sprays – are equally as dangerous. Labels warn us to wash off our skin immediately, do not get the product in your eyes or your pets’ eyes, and KEEP THEM AWAY FROM CHILDREN! They also warn to keep your children away from the pet until the product has dried completely. The label also warns of overdoses and of the effects of allergies to any of the chemicals in the products.
A recent fact sheet presented by the FDA (Animal Health Literacy) alerts both pet owners and veterinarians about the potential adverse events associated with Isooxazoline flea and tick products. These are products that have been approved by the FDA and contain this ingredient but has recently been proven to have harmful effects on dogs, cats, and humans.
The FDA-approved drugs in this class are:
Bravecto (fluralaner) tablets and topical solution for cats and dogs
Nexgard (afoxalaner) tablets for dogs
Simparica (sarolaner) tablet for dogs
Credelio (lotilaner) tablets for dogs
Revolution Plus (selamectin and sarolaner) topical for cats
Note: The FDA considers products in the isooxazoline class to be “safe” but is providing this warning since these products have been associated with terrible neurologic adverse reactions including tremors, ataxia and seizures in some dogs and cats.
